The project has evolved and evolved during development. At first it was hard to make good looking gfx with the screen2 limitations. The first graphics that were done looked a bit too ‘clean’ and ‘happy’.
Luckily we discovered ‘La-Mulana‘. The gfx for this game are awesome. It is a PC game that looks and feels like an MSX1 game as Konami could have done back in the 80’s. The good thing is that all graphics from the game are stored in BMP’s. So it was easy to study their techniques. The bad thing was that this game inspired us so much that the graphics looked a lot like La-Mulana’s because we used the same techniques.
When John finished the first version of the game script/story it came clear that most gfx needed to be redone. The game’s setting was different than we first intended. The castle, sewer and ship levels were abandoned. Some graphics are recycled into new levels graphics but for the main part new graphics were made. After pixeling for more than 2 year in Polka! it is very easy nowadays to make new gfx’s.
Currently 10 out of 12 levels are 90% done. But the gfx for the approx. 8 bosses are still in an early stage.
